Hollister Hills SVRA: June 22nd-24th, 2001

For the second half of our back-to-back weekends of four wheeling, our destination was Hollister Hills SVRA. We left from Dave's apartment in Dublin late Friday afternoon and were treated with sitting in traffic getting out of San Jose for longer than I care to remember. By the time we got to Hollister we were glad to be off the beaten path for the next couple of days. We rolled into Sycamore camp hoping there would be a decent campsite left, but when we arrived, there was no one in site. We took the secluded campsite back amongst the trees because there are usually some drunken people blasting techno music into all hours of the night (Saturday Night's arrivals). After camp was set up around 6pm, we headed on over to the obstacle course to see what was going on.

Bill heads into the frame twister
One of the best reasons for going to Hollister in late June is because they run the Top Truck Challenge during the second week of the month. This means that most of the obstacles are still fortified from the week long competition. We hiked down the tank trap and found green paint all along the wall where this year's winner simply slid his truck on its side up the hill. There were ruts 3' deep that would swallow a tire like nothing. I can't wait for the November issue of Four Wheeler to see how all that paint got there.
Another built up obstacle is the frame twister. It was left how it was during the competition, but it had dried out. Even dry, the frame twister was tough. The telephone poles that go across it were totally dug out so there were 2' gaps in between them. I found the best way to do it with lockers was to zig zag your way through it.

There were hard parts for both long and short wheel bases

There weren't many people there Friday evening but more and more people trickled in over the weekend. After playing around in the obstacle course for a little bit, we headed down Garner Loop road in search of some firewood.  We headed back to camp and had a nice dinner

The next morning, Mark showed up at camp. We had expected about 3 other trucks to show up but unsurprisingly, the people didn't show up. We headed down Garner Loop again since Dave and Bill wanted to give the mud bog we spotted the previous night a try. We had no idea how deep it was, so Dave cautiously went in.
