When it was decided that the anniversary of MyBigBronco.com would be held at Hollister Hills SVRA, one of the favorite haunts of the WT 4 Wheel Drive club, we began getting as many members as possible to attend at least one of the three days of 'wheeling. We took Bryan 'BigB' Kale on one of our trail rides in January of 2001 and have been supportive of his club when it was but a shadow of what it has grown to be today. Since I know the trails of Hollister better than many of the towns I drive through, I figured it would be great to 'host' the event since many of the MyBigBronco people are based in Southern California.

In anticipation for the amount of people showing up, Bill and I drove down to Hollister and arrived a few minutes before noon. Once we had established camp, the two of us went out to explore some of the more obscure and unmarked trails of the park. Since there were only two trucks, we covered a lot of trails and scouted some good sections to take vehicles through in the following days.

Better times at the rock quarry

After checking out the Hill Climb Return Trail, Bill said he wanted to 'do something hairy' to burn some time till some of the others in our group showed up. We took the Quail Trail over to the West Trail and sized up the 'rock quarry' area. The picture on the left is a photo of me on our February '01 trip and I was trying to get up the granite face to the right of where I am in the picture. I was having a time getting my back tires over the hump after several attempts and the loss of all my windshield washer fluid. from the angle. I was backing off after an attempt and I felt something was wrong through the brake pedal. Also, the smell of gear fluid was another clue. I got out and found my radius arm attached to the I-Beam on top.

The flange on the radius arm that bolts to the I-Beam broke, and that caused the differential to pitch up and break the pinion gear. We get the Bronco on semi-level ground and Hi-Lifted the tire off the ground. The I-Beam was pulled back into place with a come-along and secured with a winch strap. After making sure the straps and come along were securing the axle, we slowly headed down the haul road to camp via Prospect Road. On our way, I heard Chris on the radio and saw him a moment later on the small rise next to the lake. He followed us back to camp while where we admired his newly lifted Bronco, shod with Super Swampers. Anthony and his girlfriend, Lisa were the next to show up with their clean Explorer lifted 5.5" on 33's. Light was fading fast and Bill, Chris and I walked down to the school house while Anthony set up camp. I thought I remembered the gate combination so I wrote down '1515' on the paper I taped to the school's porch. When Dave came walking into the campsite he told me it was wrong and I remembered the combination was '1551'.... oh well. Travis and Mitch showed up shortly thereafter, and Ryan pulled his tow rig and trailer into camp within a few minutes. Friday night was pretty low key besides a 300 lb boar knocking over my propane tree and breaking my lantern. Bill and I ran him out of camp a few times before we fell asleep.

Saturday morning saw Don (Jopey), Jonathan (Jay0807), Mark and Stacie, Damon, Kenny and Tauna brought their group into the park and they went to camp at the day use area since the campground was now completely filled.

I told Mark to bring down his new Ready Welder but we couldn't get the wire to spool cleanly. Looks like I'd have to make the drive home on the winch straps. Thankfully it was the bottom flange that broke, so physics would keep the axle in place as I drove forward.

After everyone assembled Saturday morning, we hit the obstacle course.
