After Pismo '01, just about everyone was looking forward to returning on the annual trip. Securing wood was a concern, but Rafael brought down some that got us started on the first night.

Bill decided to make the trip more interesting by doing his solid axle swap in the week leading up to the trip. He was unable to leave with Dave, JB and myself at the set departure time on Friday morning. We left Livermore around 9:30 and made our way down I-5, leapfrogging around truckers at about 70 mph. Dave had the top and doors off and was getting a taste of what a windy day is like. We hopped over to Paso Robles on CA-41/43 for a gas stop and then 30 more miles to San Luis Obispo. After getting some groceries, we headed out to the beach and hooked up with Rafael. The wind was howling so we did our best to set up camp. I couldn't set my tent up because the wind was so strong.

It was sunny, but the wind and flying sand made things tough on us. We got camp setup somewhat, and then went out in the sand dunes for a brief drive to get reacquainted with sand driving and dune descents.

Dave and Rafael got some air early on but I was content to keep four tires on the ground, for the most part. I am pretty certain my broken radius arm last year was a result of getting some air. Around dusk, Don showed up with McFly in the passenger seat, towing Bill's trailer full of wood. They managed to get the thing about half full, meaning we would have plenty of wood for a nice and large fire.

Bert and Anthony both arrived after dark and began unpacking. It was around 9 pm when Bill finally showed up. We were waiting on him before going out for some night wheeling and set off while he setup camp.

All of us headed out in a stream of off-road lights. There wasn't too much action at tabletop or truck hill so we played around and didn't really do anything too rough. I led most of the guys out through the sand highway and we found ourselves in the middle of the usual Friday night stuck-fest. Motor homes, cars, minivans, two-wheel drive trucks..... All of them stuck in the soft sand just beyond the beach. I helped a family in a Honda Civic out before returning to camp.

On Saturday morning, people ventured out into the dunes in two's and three's to see what was going on. Dave got stuck in some soft, virgin sand and Rafael tried to come to the rescue, but buried himself in the process. I imagine they wished they had a Pull-Pal about now. JB tried to pull out Dave from the front without any luck. Finally, Dave got free and yanked Rafael out from the rear in 2WD since his front axle shaft had broken.

Most everyone met up at a sweeping sand dune and took turns at it. The whoops at the bottom of the hill made it sort of tough to get a lot of speed at the bottom of the hill, but keeping on the gas all the way up was key. Most of us headed out to Competition Hill while Dave took his Bronco back to camp.
