Pismo Beach - June 21st-23rd, 2003

Saturday morning we mounted up and headed out into the dunes. Before we got far from camp, Don had to repair his front driveshaft. After a few minutes of wrenching, we were on our way again. We stopped at a group of people on quads and dirtbikes watching people take turns at hitting a jump to get some big air. After that, we continued out to the sand highway and followed it south towards competition hill.

After finding I had less and less braking pressure, I stopped and found my bearings had totally worn through, causing the brake rotor to wear through the caliper and grind into the knuckle. What was worse was the spindle lock nut was chewed up at the end. We went into town and got what new parts I needed. The wind was whipping up by then and it was nearing 4 pm. I gingerly drove it back to the campsite and a few of us went into town for dinner and to see the annual car show.

While I had been fixing my truck, most of the group went to a nearby sand dune to see the mistake a Toyota driver had made by not 'looking before he leapt'.

It took Dave a few tries to get this guy out of this position. At first, he couldn't get the truck started. Eventually, he got it into gear and was able to help himself out of the bottom of the sand bowl. Click here to see the video clip (recommended for broadband)..

On the second night, I didn't have to start the fire in the evening - I simply dug up the fire from the previous night to start it. Dave made some money pulling out the Chevy Dually with the trailer on Saturday evening. Go figure the TJ with them couldn't do the job. Later, Alex and JAFO brought the Ranger down and promptly smashed the radiator in it on a night run.
